Taillefer Long
I love what I do and I do what I love, who could ask for more? What sets my approach apart is my ability to understand and interpret concepts. Raised abroad and immersed in foreign cultures for most of my life, I understand the nuances of communicating and translating ideas in context. Learning how to visually interpret messages and authors’ visions has been a natural extension of the fluency I acquired in Italian, French, and Spanish (English is my mother tongue).
I pride myself on clear communication with authors and clients. In order to meet a wide range of expectations and goals, I have dedicated myself to learning a wide range of styles, approaches, traditional and digital tools and media. Much of my published work for Children’s Books has been more cartoon-like, clean/digital style, for , and a loose, sketch-style pen and ink approach for Editorial Cartoons
Besides taking extensive courses at UNC Chapel Hill in advertising, I received a master’s degree in Project Management for Website Development from the European Institute of Design. I have worked as an Ad Designer for the Charleston Mercury and designed the layout for several online publications.
I love the process of visual storytelling and creative collaborations with new and established authors and editors, and take it upon myself to make the whole process very painless for my clients!
Creative Collaboration: I think each step along the way (the Design,Illustration, and Publishing Process) should be considered a team-effort rather than as a service being provided. The problem with all Self-Publishers and most Publishing Houses is that they streamline production into separate efforts that often lose the momentum generated by each participant. It is a Creative Process and the ultimate goal should remain the same: To Bring an Idea to Life!

New to self-publishing but determined to have the finest illustrations gracing May’s story, I searched, reviewed, contacted and ultimately interviewed a number of illustrators. I was so happy to find Taillefer’s portfolio on the SCBWI site.
He has been a pleasure to work with from day one. Not only is his description above accurate, but if possible, he has done even more than this for me. Since he is also a writer, he “gets” what I am trying to do, thus – this TRULY has been a collaborative effort. In fact, several of his ideas were better than mine, and I’ve changed the manuscript to incorporate them.
He takes pleasure I think, in delighting his customer. Though we are not finished with the project yet, I could not be more pleased with the results thus far.
It may sound silly to some, but I really prayed about this decision (and enlisted several others to pray along with me) and – as usual – God answered abundantly.
If you have any question about working with him on your project, I would be most happy for you to contact me.
